Swell has been managing musicians since 1986. The first success was The Pursuit of Happiness, signed to Chrysalis Records and produced by Todd Rundgren. They toured the world, opening for Eurythmics, Duran Duran, and The Replacements. A couple of years later, Crash Test Dummies joined the fold. Steve Berlin produced their first album released by BMG and Arista, Jerry Harrison produced the next album, and then all hell broke loose. They sold over 10 million records and were nominated for Grammys, Junos, American Music Awards, MTV Awards, and more. They even won some! The band appeared on Letterman, The Tonight Show, SNL, The Jon Stewart Show, Conan, Top of the Pops, Geld und Liebe and many more. That success allowed Swell to start the Handsome Boy label. They had great success with Rusty and Grayfolded. Former management clients include Rusty, Crash Test Dummies, GGGarth Richardson, Randy Bachman, Art Bergman, Babybird, Logan Staats, Kovacs and Ashley MacIsaac. Jeff Rogers is the principal of the company, he left for a few years in the early 2000s to work at V2 Records in New York (owned by Richard Branson). While there, he got to work with Underworld, Black Crowes, Grandaddy, and Moby. Jeff was nominated in 2002 for a Grammy for producing Moby's "PlaytheDVD." He moved back to Canada to produce films and be closer to family. The current company has morphed into management, film, and consulting. The current music roster includes Christopher Ward, Stephen Stohn and producer Scotty Hard.

"For this video, I got footage from as many different frontlines as I could - I wanted to visually show that all our struggles as First Nations are ultimately one and the same," emphasizes Logan Staats. "The fight for our 6 miles each side on the Grand River is one fight of many across Turtle Island. Gidim’ten Checkpoint, Camp Morgan, Tiny House Warriors, Fairy Creek, Landback Lane - I've spent time at all these frontlines, and this is one small way for me to help - to use my platform to bring awareness to what's going on. I want to bring my fans and the viewers on the same journey I went on. I hope this will spark conversation and inspire change that will spread like wildfire."
Logan is our newest management client. Here is what he has to say about this song: “Holy man is about a moment in my life where I was in such a low place that I considered picking up a book that was actually the manual for the genocide of my people. In the end I realized it was my own culture that would lift me up.” - Logan Staats
This was the first hit at Handsome Boy. It launched Rusty, got played on 12 Minutes on MTV and got us a Joint Venture deal with Atlantic Records. Kris Lefcoe did an excellent job directing this.
Me and my sister Layla Staats felt so honoured to pay tribute to fellow Mohawk songwriter and legend Robbie Robertson at the Canadian Walk of Fame memorial segment. Robbie was such a huge part of our musical life growing up and felt like the soundtrack to our earliest days experiencing the magic of Mohawk music. We wanted to do something special for our community, for our fans and for Robbie’s fans. Nia:went kowa Robbie for everything you have done for music, and for our people. You taught this young Mohawk kid how to dream. You will for ever be embodied in my music, my stories and my dreams. Here is a slowed down Staatsifide acoustic rendition of our favourite timeless song “The Weight” konoronkwa old friend, prayers up tobacco down.
There would be no Handsome Boy without this band and this 1994 hit song.
One day, I got back from lunch and Bob Mitchell, who worked in my office, snapped a little pink message at me. With a smile on his face he said "Weird Al's Manager Called". I pushed everything off my desk, made the call and told Jay that he had me at "I manage Weird Al". After they put it out, we booked the Dummies to play the Much Music Awards in Canada. They were tired of the song and I had an idea to spice it up. I called Much, and I called Jay. Al flew up and after the first verse walked out dressed like Brad and gave the song a new meaning.
My company and entire business life owe everything to this band. I used to see this video on Much Music and they were my favorite band. Then Joni Daniels said to me, "Will you manage my friend's band?". I said no, I'm too busy. Joni told me the Erica had to interview the band that day and maybe I could come with her. Then she told me it was The Pursuit of Happiness. My response "THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS DON'T HAVE A MANAGER!!!!!!!". Erica (who introduces the clip here) let me tag along. A few months later, the band was on the cover of NOW magazine and selling out Lee's Palace in Toronto. Now, I was not the only manager pursuing them. Joni, Erica and Dave's ex Cathy all helped me to woo the band. Eventually they signed with me. I had the time of my professional life with this wonderful band.
I met Kovacs during the pandemic through my friend Jessica Rose. She did not need a manager until late last year. I went to see her perform in December '22 in Utrecht. She is a spectacular singer and a wonderful human. I met Ferran, who I now co-manage Kovacs with. Jonathan Quarmby was also in attendance as he produced the most recent album. This album contains some wonderful music. Child of Sin is truly an album. It even features a duet with Rammstein vocalist Till Lindemann(video coming at the end of May). Highly recommended.
I don't manage Robb Nash, and he is not on Handsome Boy. I consult with Robb and his team. Robb is a special human and so at the people on his team. I now count myself among them. Steve Smith told me about Robb. I had never heard of him and Steve said pre-pandemic he played to over 500,000 people in Canada. Steve went on the explain that Robb rolls into theatres with a full rock show and then talks about his experiences with life's challenges and the darkness that can creep in. RBC and Kid's Help Phone sponsored the tour. Peter Mansbridge had just written a book called "Exceptional Canadians" and Robb was in it. There is a lot to tell you about Robb Nash, but I will just leave you with this video.
